May 2003: Molecular modeling workshops

Professor Warren Hehre, President & CEO of Wavefunction will be in the UK later this year to provide some short (2-3 hour) informal hands on molecular modelling workshops using the latest Spartan modelling software from Wavefunction.

These workshops are an ideal opportunity to see what the latest modern desktop molecular modelling software has to offer you in an informal environment and if you can round up a few colleagues who are also interested we would be delighted to bring him along to your site for a 2-3 hour meeting.

Warren is a very entertaining and sometimes controversial speaker and of course is well known in the modelling field, so we can promise an interesting session! We carry a bunch of Sony notebooks for the hands-on session and only need a room and some power.

December 2002: Origin 7 reviewed

Origin 7 was recently reviewed in the November 2002 issue of Scientific computing world, where it was compared to other scientific graphing software. They said

"Origin is the heavier weight product of the two in every way, with a wider range of capability…"

"Origin really now positions itself as an analysis product for those whose primary requirement is publication of visualizations…"

PC magazine also reviewed Origin in their May 2002 issue, where it received the editors choice award and a 4 star rating. They said

"With the release of Origin 7.0 (available in Standard and Professional versions), the company has added numerous ease-of-use enhancements and a totally revamped language strategy to leap to a leadership position in the category."

"Origin 7 has narrowed the gap in ease of use and bested its competitors on power, analytic muscle, and capability as a development tool."

November 2002: Spartan '02 available for Mac

Wavefunction is pleased to announce the release of the first version of Spartan for Macintosh running exclusively under OS X. This new version will take full advantage of OS X features such as fully preemptive multi-tasking, hardware accelerated open GL graphics, and a multi-button mouse. Through Wavefunction's collaboration with Q-Chem, this new version also includes an entirely new set of computational engines offering a host of powerful methods not available in previous Macintosh releases.

Computational enhancements include: Density Functional methods [local, BP, BLYP, EDF1, and B3LYP]; Møller Plesset methods [MP2, MP3, MP4, and LMP2]; and Advanced Correlated methods [among others, CCSD, CCSD(T), G3, and G3(MP2)]. A wide variety of Gaussian basis sets and pseudopotentials are available. In addition to the range of new methods, major improvements in the computational engines include analytical frequencies for Hartree-Fock and density functional models, resulting in speed increases of an order of magnitude for these calculations.

Graphical User Interface improvements include building in multiple molecule styles, and extensions to Quick-Time features include animations of user-driven processes such as the construction of molecules, rotation, translation, scaling, and minimization. A new graphical indicator "local ionization potential" has been implemented. Mapped onto an electron density surface, this provides an alternative to electrostatic potential maps for the description of electrophilic processes. Another 300 reactions have been added to the internal transition-state library in support of transition state geometry calculations. The "Tutorial and User's Guide" is now available under the Help menu in HTML format.
